This is the most important architecture prize that recognises architects work on the European Union. The principal objectives are to recognise and commend excellence in the field of architecture and to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new concepts and technologies.
The award is given by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. Projects which are found worthy of the award are nominated by carefully chosen, independent experts from all European countries and members of ACE – the Architects’ Council of Europe. In the next stage, the jury will evaluate all nominated projects and determine a final shortlist.
The Mies van der Rohe Award was given for the first time in 1987 and is funded by the European Union’s Culture Programme in collaboration with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe. The prize will be awarded in Barcelona in May 2015.
As part of the Daoiz y Verlarde complex of former barracks the objective is to preserve the architecture; a representative sample of Madrid’s industrial and military heritage.
Sustainable and energy saving refurbishing
The refurbishment of this former industrial building, and abandoned barracks, has been made in a sustainable way as regards energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energy capture systems.
